Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 Review

At just £69.99 the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 is one of the cheapest slates around, but take one look at the specs list and you’ll see how it’s managed to be so affordable, as it would have felt dated and low end several years ago.

Still, the price point could make it tempting for anyone on a tight budget, but is it worth investing in or are you best off saving a little bit more?

Design

The Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 is made of plastic as you’d expect. It’s very plain plastic too, with a back cover that’s all in one colour other than the logo and at 9.9mm thick it’s fairly chunky.

However, that’s all to be expected at this price and it does at least feel solidly built, which prevents it feeling like a toy. The large bezels around the screen don’t look good but they do at least give you somewhere to rest your hands. It’s plain at best, ugly at worst, but the design is far from a disaster and perfectly functional.

Screen

Sadly, the screen is somewhat less functional, as at 7.0 inches and 540 x 960 it has a pixel density of just 157 pixels per inch. That doesn’t make it the most pleasant thing to use and the colours on the TFT display look distinctly washed out.

Don’t even think about using this thing outside or viewing it at an angle, but even viewed straight on it’s not a great experience. Again, this is a cheap tablet we’re talking about so it’s unreasonable to expect a great screen, but when it’s so bad that it heavily impacts its usability it deserves criticism.

Power

There’s a 1.2GHz triple-core MediaTek MT8117 processor powering the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7. That’s very low end, but thankfully performance still doesn’t seem awful, even though there’s also just 512MB of RAM.

Keep multitasking to a minimum and avoid high end games and the experience is adequate, though often still a little sluggish. It’s acceptable for basic web browsing and app usage, which is all we’d really expect at this price.

Camera

The Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 has a 0.3MP snapper on both the front and back. That’s a very low spec, but it could have easily skipped one or both cameras altogether at this price, so it’s nice to see two included.

Obviously you’re not going to get detailed photos with either of them, but they’re there if needed and you can also use them for low quality video conversations.

Interface and features

The Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat, which is a couple of generations behind, so you’re not getting an up to date experience. The good news though is that the interface is very close to stock Android, so you at least get an intuitive interface with little in the way of bloat.

There’s not much in the way of notable features, after all this is a £70 tablet, but that’s pretty notable in itself. The fact that Alcatel has launched a tablet which works and has all the basics for such a low price is the main thing the Pixi 7 has going for it.

Battery Life, Memory and Connectivity

There’s a 2840 mAh battery in the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7, which is small for a tablet, even a 7.0-inch one. Sadly, but unsurprisingly, it translates into low battery life. You’ll be able to watch two or three movies on the Pixi 7, but after that you’ll likely have to reach for a charger.

There’s just 4GB of built in storage, which is a tiny amount, but there is at least a microSD card slot, allowing you to expand it by up to 32GB more.

There’s no cellular connectivity on the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7, so connectivity options are limited to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Conclusion

The Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 is about as basic as a tablet can possibly get and it doesn’t even do all of those basics well, with the screen in particular proving a disappointment.

Yet given its £69.99 price tag those issues are just about acceptable. You can get a far better tablet experience if you spend a little more, but if you’re really counting the pennies the Alcatel OneTouch Pixi 7 will get the job done for basics like web browsing and using social media.
